What should you not do with a flag?
Respecting the Flag
Whether you are flying the National Flag of Canada or a custom corporate flag, there are certain protocols and practical rules you should follow.
1. Never Let It Touch the Ground
A flag should never touch the ground, floor, or water beneath it. When lowering or handling a flag, it should be received with hands and folded respectfully.
2. Do Not Fly a Tattered Flag
It is a sign of disrespect to fly a flag that is faded, torn, or badly frayed. Once a flag is no longer in a fitting condition for display, it should be replaced immediately. Many flag manufacturers offer repair services if caught early.
3. Do Not Deface the National Flag
You should never print words, logos, or marketing messages over a national flag. Corporate branding should always be printed on a separate, dedicated flag.
4. Don't Fly It in Extreme Storms
Unless you have an "all-weather" flag made of ultra-durable spun polyester, you should lower your flags during severe storms or high winds to prevent premature tearing.
