What are the 5 rules of flag design?
The North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) Guidelines
When designing a flag for your business or organization, it helps to follow the 5 basic principles of flag design established by NAVA. These rules ensure your flag is recognizable, memorable, and effective from a distance.
1. Keep It Simple
A flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory. Complex designs turn into unrecognizable blurs when the flag is flapping in the wind or viewed from afar.
2. Use Meaningful Symbolism
The images, colors, or patterns should relate to what the flag symbolizes. A corporate flag should use colors that align with your brand identity.
3. Use 2 to 3 Basic Colors
Limit your palette to two or three contrasting colors from the standard color set (red, white, blue, green, yellow, black). Good contrast ensures readability.
4. No Lettering or Seals
While promotional feather flags often use text, traditional horizontal flags should avoid lettering or complex seals. Text is hard to read from a distance and appears backward on the reverse side of the flag.
5. Be Distinctive or Be Related
Your flag should be unique to avoid confusion with other flags. However, if you are part of a larger organization, you can use related design elements to show connection.
By following these 5 rules, you can ensure your custom printed flag looks professional and stands out!
