What are the 5 principles of flag design?
Mastering Flag Design
Creating a visually striking flag isn't just about making it look pretty on a computer screen; it must function in the real world. Here are the 5 principles of flag design.
1. Simplicity
The flag should be so simple that it can be drawn from memory. Avoid complex shading or intricate line work.
2. Meaningful Symbolism
Every color and shape should have a purpose. If you use a star, know why you are using it. If you use blue, ensure it aligns with your brand or organization's values.
3. Limit Colors
Stick to 2 or 3 colors. Standard flag colors (red, blue, green, black, yellow, white) offer the best contrast. Avoid putting dark colors next to dark colors.
4. No Lettering
Unless it is a promotional advertising banner, traditional flags should never use text. Text is illegible when the flag is waving and reads backward on the reverse side.
5. Distinctiveness
Your flag shouldn't look like anyone else's. It needs to be easily identifiable from a distance without confusion.
