Applying Heat Transfer Vinyl to Nylon
If you are a crafter looking to apply Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) to a blank nylon flag, you must proceed with caution. Yes, you can heat press nylon, but it requires specific materials and exact temperatures.
The Challenge with Nylon
Nylon is highly heat-sensitive and will shrink, warp, or melt if exposed to the standard 300°F+ temperatures used for pressing cotton. Furthermore, many flags have a waterproof coating that prevents adhesives from sticking.
How to Do It Successfully
- Use Specialized HTV: You must purchase HTV specifically formulated for nylon (e.g., Siser EasyWeed Extra). Standard HTV will peel off.
- Low Temperature: Follow the vinyl manufacturer's guidelines, which usually require a lower temperature (around 275°F to 285°F).
- Short Press Time: Keep the press time short (10-15 seconds) to prevent scorching the flag.
- Test First: Always test on a small, inconspicuous corner of the hem before pressing the main design.
For professional commercial flags, dye-sublimation on polyester is always preferred over heat pressing vinyl on nylon.
