Ironing Nylon Flags Safely
When you receive a new nylon flag, it will often have deep fold creases from shipping. Yes, you can iron a nylon flag, but you must be extremely careful. Nylon is a synthetic plastic and will melt if exposed to high heat.
How to Iron It
- Use the Lowest Setting: Set your iron to the lowest possible heat setting (often labeled 'synthetic' or 'cool').
- Use a Pressing Cloth: Never place the hot iron directly on the flag. Place a damp cotton towel or pillowcase over the flag and iron over the cloth.
- Keep Moving: Do not leave the iron in one spot. Keep it moving continuously to prevent heat buildup.
The Better Alternative: Steaming
The safest and most effective way to remove wrinkles from nylon is using a handheld garment steamer. The steam will relax the fibers and drop the wrinkles out without any risk of melting the flag.
